Leathernecks Drop Two to No. 15 Missouri

Hoosier Classic next up for softball

COLUMBIA, MO. – The Western Illinois softball team played a double-header against No. 15 Missouri on Wednesday, March 16, where they dropped both games by identical scores of 6-0. With the pair of the losses, the Leathernecks fall to 6-19 on the season, while the Tigers improve to 17-4.

Game One: Missouri 6, Western Illinois 0

The Leathernecks reached base in every inning up until the sixth, but could never find the timely hit to drive base runners home as they left a total of 10 on base throughout the game.

Kelsey Marlow and Aly Compton hit back-to-back singles in the top of the first and eventually made their way to scoring position before being left stranded. Missouri scored four runs in the bottom half of the first and one in the bottom of the fifth to give themselves a comfortable 5-0 lead through two innings.

In the top of the third, Tierney Bottino hit a leadoff single to left field and Marlow walked to force a Tiger pitching change. At the end of three innings, the Leathernecks were still held scoreless.

Western's best chance to respond came in the top of the fourth when Nina Maggio drew a leadoff walk. Holly Hoelting then hit a single to right field and Karissa Kouchis drew Western's fifth walk of the game to load the bases with one out. Bottino then popped up and the Tiger second baseman stepped on second base for the third out, ending the inning and leaving two stranded.

In the bottom of the fourth, Missouri added one more run to extend their lead to 6-0 following a sacrifice fly from Chloe Rathburn. The Leathernecks could not find a way to answer back and dropped the first game to the No. 15 Tigers by a final score of 6-0.

Freshman Emily Ira pitched a complete game from the circle. She gave up five earned runs off of 11 hits, striking out three and walking none. Marlow led the team with two base hits and one walk.

Game Two: Missouri 6, Western Illinois 0

Much like the first game, the Tigers scored four runs in the first inning and one in the second to give themselves an early 5-0 lead. Missouri would also score one run in the third to lead 6-0, but starting pitcher Kacyee Hart and the Leatherneck defense would hold them scoreless the rest of the game.

In the top of the sixth, Kouchis and Bottino launched back-to-back singles to center field in hopes of getting a Leatherneck rally started. A groundout from Compton moved the two into scoring position, but unfortunately they were left aboard in the bottom of the sixth.

At the end of seven innings, the Leathernecks were not able to find a way to score and Tigers went on to win by a score of 6-0.

Hart pitched a complete six innings, only giving up five earned runs off of five hits. Bottino led the way with one hit and one walk.

The Leathernecks are now on the tail end of their ten-day, 12 game road trip. Invitational play will come to a close this weekend at the 2016 Hoosier Classic in Bloomington, Indiana, on March 18-20. Western will take on Bowling Green, Indiana, Michigan State and Wright State over three days before heading home to open Summit League play the following weekend.
