Softball Falls to Wichita State in Midweek Action

Nina Maggio drove in three runs off of three hits

WICHITA, Kan. – The Western Illinois softball team took on Wichita State on Tuesday, March 15, in midweek action. The Leathernecks battled but could not overcome the Shockers and fell by a final score of 9-4. With the loss, WIU falls to 6-17 on the season, while Wichita State improves to 12-9.

After the Shockers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, Western responded in the top of the second starting with a leadoff double from Kelsey Marlow. The next at bat, Marlow advanced to third when Aly Compton hit a single to center field. Nina Maggio then came up to the plate and smacked a two-run single to right center to give the Leathernecks a 2-1 lead.

The Shockers responded by scoring one run in the bottom of the second and two in the bottom of the third to regain their lead 5-2.

In the top of the fourth, Compton reached first on an error by the WSU shortstop. She then advanced to second off a sacrifice bunt from Taylor Messer, and then moved to third on a passed ball. The next at bat, Maggio drove in her third run of the game when she singled down the left field line to score Compton and cut Western's deficit to two. Maggio eventually made her way home when Rachel Beatty doubled to right center. At the end of the first half of the fourth inning, the Leathernecks had cut the Shockers' lead to 5-4.

Wichita State would answer back in the bottom of the fourth when they scored four runs off four hits to pull ahead. Western could not find a way to respond after that and fell to the Shockers by a final score of 9-4.

Maggio led the way with three hits and three RBIs on the afternoon, tying her career high in both hits and RBIs. Karissa Kouchis also had two hits, extending her chitting streak to six games. Compton led the team with two runs.

Brooke Stulga made her second start of the season, pitching 3.1 innings with nine hits and six earned runs. Payton Abbott came in for relief, making her second appearance on the year. Abbott pitched 2.2 innings, limiting the Shockers to one hit, one walk, and struck out two.
