Softball Falls to Kansas, 4-1

Leathernecks will conclude Jayhawk Invitational play tomorrow morning

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Western Illinois softball team took on the Kansas Jayhawks Saturday morning (March 12) on day two of the Jayhawk Invitational. The Leathernecks were unable to defeat KU and fell by a score of 4-1 to drop to 6-14 on the year.

Kansas scored first in the bottom of the second when Daniella Chavez hit an RBI double to centerfield, giving the Jayhawks an early 1-0 lead.

In the top of the second, freshman Hailey Duwa got the Leathernecks going with a leadoff walk. Taylor Messer followed up with a two-out single down the left field line. The next at bat, Holly Hoelting launched a one-run single to center field to score Duwa and knot the game up at 1-1.

The Western defense held Kansas to just one run until the bottom of the fifth when Chavez hit another RBI double to left field to give the Jayhawks their lead back. In the bottom of the sixth, KU would score two more runs to extend their lead to 4-1.

Hoelting tried to build momentum for a Leatherneck comeback in the bottom of the seventh when she hit her second single of the game right up the middle. Karissa Kouchis followed that up with an infield base hit, but the comeback fell short and Kansas would hang on to win 4-1.

Brooke Stulga made her first start of the season, pitching a complete seven innings. The sophomore gave up three earned runs off of ten hits and five walks. Hoelting led the team with two hits and one RBI.

Jayhawk Invitational play continues tomorrow morning (March 13) for the Leathernecks at 9 a.m. against Northern Iowa before the finale against Kansas City at 11:30.
