Western Illinois Drops 77-61 Road Contest At Marquette

Morgan Blumer had a game-high 19 points against the Golden Eagles.

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Western Illinois women's basketball team dropped a 77-61 contest on the road at Marquette Friday (Dec. 2).

Morgan Blumer posted a game-high 19 points, while the Golden Eagles were led by Natisha Hiedeman's triple-double of 12 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists.

"It was a great experience playing a good team like Marquette, who had already beaten two nationally ranked teams," said head coach JD Gravina. "A team like that really exposes some things to work on. We knew we had to shoot it really well to have a chance to beat them, but obviously that did not happen. Our matchup zone bothered them a bit, but as soon as our intensity dropped a touch, they were able to go on runs."

Both teams got off to a slow start, as the first basket came at the 6:34 mark in the first quarter by Marquette. The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 9-0 lead, and eventually held on to a 16-10 lead after the first.

Marquette opened the second quarter with a 10-2 run, to jump out to a 26-17 lead at the seven minute mark. A scoring drought over a 3:04 span put Western in a 31-18 hole with 4:27 to go until halftime. The Leathernecks were able to cut the deficit to nine following an Olivia Braun layup as time expired at halftime.

Early in the third quarter an and-1 by Olivia Kaufmann cut Marquette's lead to eight points, but the Golden Eagles responded and jumped out to a 62-49 lead entering the fourth quarter.

An 18-2 run by Marquette put the Leathernecks down 70-51 with 7:28 remaining in the game. From there, the Golden Eagles held on for a 77-61 win, improving to 6-1 overall.

Along with Blumer's game-high 19 points, Emily Clemens reached double-digit scoring with 12 points to go with three assists and two steals.
Marquette's had four reach double figures in scoring with Allazia Blockton (15 points) and Hiedeman (12), capped off by Danielle King and Amani Wilborne who each added 10.

Up next for the Leathernecks is a Monday (Nov. 5) matchup against in-state rival Bradley at 7 p.m. It will be the first of three straight home games for the Leathernecks and will air live on ESPN3.

"Traditionally, we've been really good at bouncing back after a tough loss, so I'm hoping our players will really respond Monday," said Gravina.
