Covington Moves into Top 10 of WIU Career Scoring List in Loss at Miami University

Miami used a second-half run to regain the lead and defeat Western 81-72

COACH WRIGHT POSTGAME RADIO INTERVIEW

OXFORD, Ohio – Western Illinois senior guard Garret Covington scored a season-high 29 points and jumps into the Top 10 of WIU's career scoring list during the Leathernecks' 81-72 loss at Miami University Saturday (Nov. 26).

Western led for nearly all of the first half and built its lead up to 10 points early in the second half, but Miami used a 25-5 run late to regain the lead and improve to 3-3 on the season. The Leathernecks drop to 2-4 on the season after the loss.

"Coach Coop (Miami head coach Jon Cooper) does a great job with his team and we expected them to make a run," said head coach Billy Wright. "We had some defensive miscues and we gave up a couple of threes that should not have happened… and down the stretch some careless turnovers. Give (Miami) credit for making the plays, making the shots, and making the free throws down the stretch to cut into our lead and eventually take the lead."

Besides Covington, Mike Miklusak and C.J. Duff each scored in double figures. Miklusak finished with 14 points and recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds, while Duff finished with 12 points all via the 3-point shot (4-of-8). Both Miklusak and Duff each tallied a team-best three steals.

Covington's first 3-pointer, which came early in the second half, is what propelled him past Grady McCollum (1956-60) and Jamie Lilly (1979-82) and gave him 1,449 career points. After the conclusion of the game Covington had 1,467 career points and is only six points away from passing Ceola Clark III for eighth all-time in career scoring.

Jabari Sandifer, who missed WIU's previous game due to injury, returned to the court and finished with a team-high six assists.

Miami shot better from the field (44.4 – 41. 5), 3-point range (50.0 – 34.6) and the free throw line (80.0 – 76.0). The RedHawks bettered WIU in the paint, outscoring the Leathernecks 30-18, and in points off of turnovers, 15-11.

Miami was led by Michael Weathers who finished with 19 points and six rebounds. Logan Mclane finished with 17 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Jake Wright added 15 points, all makes from long range (5-of-6).

Western wraps up its road trip in Washington, D.C. at American University Tuesday evening (Nov. 29). Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. (CT).
