Volleyball Falls on the Road at Oral Roberts

Next match is Sunday (Oct. 9) at Denver

TULSA, Okla. – The Fighting Leathernecks volleyball team took on Oral Roberts in Summit League action on Friday night (Oct.7) in Tulsa, where they fell in straight sets. With the defeat, Western Illinois stumbles to 4-18 on the season with a 1-5 mark in league play. The Golden Eagles pick up their first league win of the season to improve to 1-4 and 9-9 overall.

The Leathernecks battled in the opening set. After falling behind 9-4, the Leathernecks used a 4-0 run powered by consecutive kills from Riley Schumacher and one from Melanie Patenaude to cut their deficit to one. Another 3-0 spurt that included kills from Claire Grove and Riley Schumacher gave Western an 11-10 lead. ORU then took the lead back following a 4-0 run that put them up 14-11. Trailing 18-14, two Golden Eagle errors and a kill from Patenaude left the Leathernecks trailing by one, 18-17. An ace from Aleezah Washington and a Patenaude kill put them up 20-19 and forced an Oral Roberts timeout.

The Golden Eagles eventually worked their way back up to a 23-21 lead when consecutive kills from Patenaude tied the set at 23-23. Following a timeout, ORU was able to score two quick points to hang one for the 25-23 set one victory.

Oral Roberts got off to a quick start in the second set, as they led 12-5. The Golden Eagles continued to build their lead until three errors cut the Leathernecks' deficit to six at 18-12. Another 3-0 spurt from Western was highlighted by a kill from Schumacher to cut ORU's lead to five at 21-16. It was all Oral Roberts after that, though, as they collected the set two victory, 25-18.

ORU scored seven straight points to lead 9-1 in set three. Western was unable to stop the Golden Eagles' offensive attack, as several more runs gave ORU a large 22-9 advantage that eventually led to a 25-12 win in set three.

Patenaude led the Leathernecks with eight kills. Kaili Simmons collected 18 digs to put her at 409 on the season.

The Purple and Gold return to action this Sunday at Denver as Summit League play continues. First serve is set for noon.
