2016 'Day in the Life'
MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois volleyball team is taking a short break from Summit League play to host Valparaiso in their final non-league matchup of the season. First serve is set for Tuesday (Oct. 4) evening at 6 p.m. inside Brophy Hall.
 
PACK IT PURPLE: All Western Illinois fans in attendance are encouraged to wear purple for the 'Pack it Purple' match.
 
SCOUTING THE CRUSADERS: Valpo enters Tuesday with a 1-3 mark in Horizon League play (7-11 overall). The Crusaders recently dropped a pair of matches to Youngstown State and Cleveland State. Offensively, Valpo is led by Katherine Carlson with 191 kills. Defensively, Taylor Graboski has 50 total blocks while Morganne Longoria has garnered 327 digs.
 
SERIES HISTORY: Valparaiso leads the all-time series 28-7. Last season, Western dropped a 3-1 decision on Sept. 19. Valparaiso has taken the last three meetings from the Leathernecks dating back to Oct. 6, 2006, when Western won 3-2.
 
SIMMONS TABBED DEFENSIVE POTW: On Oct. 3, senior Kaili Simmons was named The Summit League's Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career. In Western's four-set victory over Omaha on Sept. 27, Simmons compiled a career-high 37 digs, tying for the fourth-most in program history in digs in a single match. During Sunday's match against North Dakota State, she registered 32 digs, the second-highest in a match in her career. Over 11 sets through three matches, the libero garnered 82 digs, good for 7.45 digs per set.
 
DIGGIN' IT: As a team, the Leathernecks rank sixth nationally and lead The Summit League with 1,212 digs. Simmons has accounted for 368 of those, followed by Shalyn Greenhaw with 203 and Claire Grove with 141. Simmons leads the league in total digs and digs per set with 4.97. Nationally, she ranks third and 32nd, respectively, in those categories.
 
A LOOK AT THE LEATHERNECKS: Western currently sits eighth in The Summit League with a 1-4 league record (4-16 overall). Greenhaw leads the team and ranks second in the league with 236 kills (3.19/set). Abby Skryd has dished out 535 assists and 21 service aces. Lexi Kolschefski leads the team with 53 blocks.
 
UP AHEAD: Western hits the road for a pair of Summit League matchups this weekend. On Friday (Oct. 7), the Leathernecks take on Oral Roberts before traveling to Denver for a matchup against the Pioneers (Oct. 9).
