Western Illinois Held Back by Fort Wayne, 3-0

Leathernecks return home to host Denver this Sunday

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Western Illinois volleyball team was unable to pick up the victory over Fort Wayne Friday night (Oct. 21), falling in straight sets. With the defeat, the Leathernecks drop to 4-21 on the season and 1-8 in Summit League play. The Mastodons improve to 10-12 overall and 6-3 in league play.

The Leathernecks got off to a slow start in the opening set, falling 25-9.

Western battled in the second set as they held an 8-7 lead following consecutive kills from Shiah Sanders and Claire Grove. After Fort Wayne pulled ahead to lead 16-11, Western went on a 3-0 run to pull within two. The Mastodons answered back with another spurt of points to hold a 20-15 advantage when the Leathernecks used three straight points to come back within two, 20-18. Consecutive kills from Grove and Aleezah Washington, along with a Mastodon error, tied the set at 23-23. However, Fort Wayne was able to hang on to claim the second set 25-23.

The Mastodons pulled ahead 8-4 in the third set and later used a 6-0 run to lead 16-8. Looking to stay alive, Western strung together five straight points to force a FW timeout. The run was highlighted by two kills from Melanie Patenaude, one from Lexi Kolschefski and a service ace from Grove that cut the deficit to three, 16-13. Fort Wayne would not let the Leathernecks get too close as they broke from the timeout with a 6-2 run. Down 24-17, Sanders came up with a kill but it wasn't enough as the Mastodons took set three, 25-19 and the match 3-0.

In her Leatherneck debut, freshman Makenzie Bouse led Western with 14 assists and added four digs. Patenaude and Grove led the team with seven kills apiece.

Western returns home to host Denver this Sunday (10/23) at 12 p.m. inside Western Hall.
