2016 'Day in the Life'
MACOMB, Ill. – With the second half of Summit League play on the horizon, the Western Illinois volleyball team is preparing to take on South Dakota State. First serve is set for 1 p.m. inside Western Hall.
 
SCOUTING THE JACKRABBITS: South Dakota State is 2-16 overall with a 1-5 mark in league play. The Jackrabbits have recorded wins over Eastern Illinois and Omaha. Offensively, Ashley Beaner leads the team with 199 kills (3.32/set) and is hitting .141. Ellie Benson ranks third in the league in digs per set with 4.57 and has 274 total digs on the year.
 
SERIES HISTORY: SDSU leads the all-time series 14-6. Last year, Western dropped both meetings to the Jackrabbits by scores of 3-1 (Oct. 16) and 3-0 (Nov. 14). In 2014, the Leathernecks picked up victories in both meetings with the last one coming in five sets on Nov. 15.
 
DIGGIN' IT: As a team, the Leathernecks rank fifth in the nation and lead The Summit League with 1,372 digs (16.33/set). Senior Kaili Simmons has accounted for 421 those, followed by Shalyn Greenhaw with 206 and Claire Grove with 163. In addition to leading the league, Simmons ranks second in the nation in total digs and 23rd in digs per set with 5.07.
 
A LOOK AT THE LEATHERNECKS: Western heads into Sunday with a 1-6 mark in league play and 4-19 overall. Greenhaw leads the team offensively with 248 kills, which ranks fourth in the league. Abby Skryd is averaging 7.17 assists/set with 595 on the year. She also leads the team with 21 service aces. Defensively, Simmons is the team leader with 421 digs. Lexi Kolschefski has 56 total blocks on the season.
 
WHAT'S NEXT: Following this Sunday's match, the Leathernecks travel to Fort Wayne on Friday (Oct. 21). The following Sunday, Western hosts Denver inside Western Hall. First serve is set for noon.
