Western Falls 1-0 in First Exhibition Match

Senior goalkeeper Victoria Kappel makes five saves in the defeat

MACOMB, Ill. - The Western Illinois women's soccer team dropped its season-opening exhibition to Drake by a score of 1-0 on Sunday (Aug. 9) in Macomb.

"We looked like we were in midseason form during the preseason, which is really encouraging," said head coach Dr. Ted Flogaites. "The football was moving very quickly and sharp. Aside from the one goal, I thought we were by far the better team."

Western had a few chances early in the match, but were unable to put a shot on goal before falling behind in the 17th minute when Drake scored the only goal of the game.

The Leathernecks had their best opportunity to score in the 35th minute when Skyler Jessop's shot bounced off the post.

The teams exchanged chances in the final minutes of the match, but neither were able to capitalize on any opportunities. Victoria Kappel started the match in goal for the Leathernecks and recorded five saves. Lexi Harris also made an appearance, recording one save.

Western had a total of eight shots throughout the match as opposed to Drake's 13. Jessop led the Leathernecks with seven shots.

The Purple and Gold will play its final exhibition match on Tuesday (Aug. 11) against Illinois State in Bloomington, Illinois.
