Leathernecks Earn $10,000 NCAA 'Let's Dance' Scholarship

This marks the second consecutive year in which Western has earned $10,000

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois Athletics, as part of the NCAA's 'Let's Dance' promotion, has earned a $10,000 scholarship towards the University's general scholarship fund, the NCAA recently announced. This marks the second consecutive year in which Western has earned a $10,000 scholarship to be put towards the general scholarship fund.

"To follow-up last year's NCAA '6th Fan' performance with another $10,000 in scholarships for the university's general fund is a testament to Leatherneck fans' passion for the institution," said Interim Director of Athletics Matt Tanney. "When that energy translates into additional scholarship opportunities for all Western Illinois University students, everyone wins."

As part of the promotion, the NCAA asked fans to submit a 15 second video showing how the game of basketball moves them. A winning video from each conference was chosen, with conference winners earning a $10,000 contribution to the general scholarship fund. Western Illinois' Andrew Bacon, a senior broadcasting major, submitted the video on behalf of the University, and his video was selected as one of the national finalists.

"I knew how much the '6th Fan' competition meant to the University last year and thought this could benefit the school in the same way if I was able to be selected as a finalist," said Bacon.

The financial contribution comes on the heels of last year's NCAA '6th Fan' contest, in which WIU's runner-up finish resulted in $10,000 being donated into the general scholarship fund as well.
