Season Ends With Loss to Jackrabbits

Western Illinois fell 7-6 in the opening round of The 2015 Summit League Softball Championships

FARGO, N.D. – Western Illinois lost a 7-6 ballgame to South Dakota State on Thursday (May 7). The loss to the Jackrabbits ended the 2015 season for Western, with the Leathernecks finishing the season with an 18-23 record.

Western got on the board in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead early in the contest. After Sammy Marshall singled and stole second, the senior advanced to third on an error. Tierney Bottino hit a sacrifice fly to put Western in front 1-0.

South Dakota State tied the game in the second, hitting a lead off home run off of Kayla Kirkpatrick. With the game tied, Lia Romeo scored Marshall in the third inning to put the Leathernecks back in front 2-1. Two more Jackrabbit home runs put SDSU in front 3-2.

Western Illinois regained the lead in the fourth inning, utilizing singles from Karissa Kouchis and Bottino to take a 5-3 lead into the fifth. After recording the final out of the fourth, Brooke Stulga stayed in the game to work the fifth. The Jackrabbits took a 7-5 lead, capped by a two-run home run.

Holly Hoelting cut the deficit in half by leading off the sixth with her fifth home run of the season. Western however couldn't tie the game off of SDSU's reliever, ending the Leathernecks' season with a 7-6 loss.

Marshall went 3-for-4 from the plate with a stolen base and three runs scored. Bottino collected three RBIs. Kayla Kirkpatrick was hit with the loss, falling to 7-9 on the year.
