Colton Pogue Stays Hot but Western Falls in Omaha

The Leathernecks dropped the weekend opener.

OMAHA, Neb. - Leatherneck second baseman Colton Pogue's bat remained hot, going 2-for-4 at the plate, but Western Illinois dropped a 4-1 Summit League decision to Omaha on Friday (April 1) in Boys Town. The loss drops Western to 8-16 overall and 4-6 in Summit League play.

"Tip your cap to (Tyler) Fox, he limits your opportunities," said head coach Ryan Brownlee. "We played solid, but we had a few bad hops that we can't control. We need to turn the page on this game and get back at it tomorrow. I like playing Omaha a lot. We always have good battles with them."

Through the first four innings of play both teams struggled to piece together more than one hit each inning, but Western broke the ice first in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Pogue, Mark Garton, and Brent Turner laced three consecutive hits to load the bases, and Roman Visintine would draw an RBI walk to give WIU a 1-0 lead.

However, Omaha (14-12, 7-3) quickly took the lead back with a three run bottom half thanks to some funny hops off the infield and aggressive base running by the Mavericks. An insurance run in the sixth made it 4-1.

Western starter Joe Mortillaro (2-2) pitched six innings and surrendered four runs (three earned) on seven hits and one error while striking out two in his second loss of the season. Jordan Pannell came in relief with two innings of two-hit scoreless baseball and one strikeout.

After hitting two doubles and a grand slam against No. 24 Iowa on Wednesday (April 1), Pogue hit his fourth double of the season against the Mavericks and scored his 11th run of the season. His double marks the third one recorded in two games and represented the only extra-base hit for either team in the game. He also scored a run while five other Leathernecks combined for five hits with Visintine notching the RBI.

Western returns to action Saturday (April 4) at 1 p.m. Tom Constand is scheduled to get the start.
