Adam McGinnis Homers in Series Finale Loss

Western collected five extra-base hits and three stolen bases.

FARGO, N.D. - Western Illinois baseball took two games from North Dakota State but missed the sweep, dropping the finale, 9-4, on Sunday (April 26) at Newman Outdoor Field.

Adam McGinnis hit his third home run of the season in the game and Colton Pogue tallied two doubles for the second time this season. JJ Reimer also hit his first triple of the year. The loss drops Western to 12-26 overall and 7-14 in The Summit League. NDSU improves to 11-26 and 5-16.

"We couldn't finish it off today. We had a great approach to the field again, and we battled all game," said head coach Ryan Brownlee following the loss. "Our guys have taken steps forward this week and we will continue to get better. Credit NDSU for finding a few more holes than we did. It was a lively series, and I am looking forward to getting back on the field with our guys on Tuesday."

In a slugfest that featured a combined 26 hits, the Leathernecks jumped on the scoreboard first in the top of the third. Pogue opened the inning with a double down the left field line before advancing to third on a NDSU balk. Brent Turner doubled to drive in Pogue, and a single from Jake Moore brought Turner home.

The Bison replied with one run on three hits and a Leatherneck error in the bottom of three, but Adam McGinnis would come back with a leadoff home run in the top of the fourth to make it 3-1, Leathernecks.

NDSU grabbed four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with the help of four hits and two errors to take the lead.

Reimer's triple came in the top of the fifth, and a ground ball from Chris Tschida would bring him in to score. Hits in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings allowed Western to threaten, but a four-run eighth for the Bison would close the door.

The Purple and Gold would end the day with five extra-base hits in the loss. Pogue, Reimer, Moore, and Turner would all finish with multiple hits, and Tschida added a pair of walks.

J.T. Baksha (2-4) would be given the loss while four additional Leathernecks appeared in relief.

Brownlee and the Leathernecks return home to Alfred D. Boyer stadium this Tuesday (April 28) for a non-league game against St. Ambrose, followed by a game on Wednesday (April 29) versus Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.
