Leathernecks Battle Braves in Midweek Loss

Western's offense came up short on Wednesday (April 22) at Dozer Park.

PEORIA, Ill. - Western Illinois baseball battled with Bradley for nine innings but fell, 4-0, on Friday (April 22) at Dozer Park.

Colton Pogue hit his seventh double of the season, and Tyler Owings allowed no earned runs in relief for the 10th time this season. The Leathernecks fall to 10-25 while Bradley improves 27-10 on the season.

"It was a great college baseball game. Both teams played well," said head coach Ryan Brownlee after the loss. "Bradley got a couple more timely hits than we did and that was the difference in the game. Our guys came to play, we just came up short."

The Braves grabbed an early run in the bottom of the first, using back-to-back hits to start the inning. Western's starter, Colan Borchers, used a strikeout and a pop fly to limit the damage.

Timely hitting for Bradley struck again in the bottom of the third.
The Braves grabbed another run on a hit and walk before Borchers retired the side with a strikeout.

The Leathernecks threatened in the top of the seventh. Mark Garton hit a two-out single, and Pogue followed up with a double to left field. Garton rounded third to come home, but a great throw from the Bradley left fielder caught Garton at the plate to retire the side.

Bradley added two runs of insurance in the bottom of the seventh to cap off the scoring.

Borchers (1-2) was saddled with the loss while eight Leatherneck pitchers combined for five innings of two-run, five-hit relief. Owings scoreless appearance dropped his ERA to a team-leading 0.87.

Pogue now leads the team in doubles and Brent Turner extended his reached-base streak to seven with a base hit of his own. Singles from Garton and Kendall King round out WIU's offense for the day.

The Purple and Gold next head to Fargo, North Dakota for a three-game series against North Dakota State beginning this Friday (April 24). Fans can listen live to all the action at GoLeathernecks.com/watch.
