Romeo and Bottino Homer but Western Falls in Series Finale

Western Illinois dropped a 6-3 decision to IUPUI on Sunday (April 12).

MACOMB, Ill. – Lia Romeo and Tierney Bottino both homered, but Western fell 6-3 on Sunday (April 12) to IUPUI. The Leathernecks dropped the series, and moved to 13-15 overall and 3-6 in Summit League play.

"I thought we did a nice job for the most part," said head coach Holly Van Vlymen. "They came into this weekend with 46 home runs and it was one of our goals to limit them and we kept them in the ballpark. Offensively we needed to make better adjustments. We saw today's pitcher for 16 innings over the weekend. We needed to look for our pitch but she did a great job this weekend."

Kacyee Hart got the nod in the circle for Western in the rubber match of the three-game series. Hart allowed a walk and a double, which put IUPUI (25-12, 7-5) in front 1-0. Western got out of the inning with a fielder's choice, before Romeo threw out a Jaguar attempting to steal second.

Western responded with a Sammy Marshall single to lead off the bottom half of the inning. She then stole second before Bottino hit her team-leading third home run of the season, giving Western a 2-1 advantage after the first inning.

Hart found herself in trouble in the second, as IUPUI put runners at the corners with one out in the inning. The Jags attempted a squeeze, but Hart flipped the ball to Romeo, keeping the Jaguars off the board for the moment. IUPUI would then load the bases, and score three runs in the inning to take a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the second.

The Jaguars scored twice in the third, one of which was issued to Brooke Stulga, who came on in relief of Hart with one on in the inning. The run would be the last IUPUI scored, as the freshman allowed just four hits the rest of the way, striking out one in the process.

Western got a boost from Romeo to lead off the fourth inning when the senior hit her second home run of the season to left, cutting the deficit to 6-3. Holly Hoelting followed with a walk, but the Leathernecks could not bring the sophomore in before the inning came to a close.

The Leathernecks had runners at first and second with nobody out in the fifth, but a pop out and a double play ended the inning.

Western had a base runner at second in each of the final two frames, threatening the Jaguars, but the Leathernecks were unable to produce the needed hit, falling 6-3.

Marshall collected three base hits on the day, while Romeo added a double to her home run for her two hits. Hart (6-7) was hit with the loss. The junior allowed five earned through two innings of work. Stulga worked the final five innings, allowing one run on four hits.

The Leathernecks welcome nationally-ranked Missouri on Wednesday (April 15) for a doubleheader at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
