MACOMB, Ill. - The Leathernecks are looking to get back to the .500 mark in 2015 and in conference play when they travel to Fort Wayne, Indiana to fae the Mastodons. The three-game series is set to begin with a single game on Saturday (March 28) at noon. The series wraps up on Sunday (March 29) with a doubleheader at 10:30 a.m.

Both the Leathernecks and Mastodons enter the weekend 0-3 in conference play after the opening conference weekend. Western is also coming off of a doubleheader split against Miami (Ohio) on Monday (March 23). Western took the first game 5-4 before falling 5-1 in the second game.


SCOUTING THE MASTODONS: Fort Wayne lost a total of 10 players from last season... The 'Dons do return nine players from last year's team that went to the conference tournament championship game... Fort Wayne began conference play with an 0-3 record after getting swept by Omaha... This weekend marks the home opener for the Mastodons... Morghyn Neal leads the team with a .245 average and five RBIs... Caitlyn DeLong leads the 'Dons with five doubles... Avery Nelson has hit two home runs for IPFW this season... In the circle, Kaitlyn Biere has worked 71.1 innings, compiling an 0-12 mark and an 8.24 ERA... Western has faced Sarah Lazarowich in previous meetings with the Mastodons... Lazarowich this season is 0-9 with an ERA above 10... Germaine Fairchild is in her first year at Fort Wayne.

SERIES HISTORY: The Leathernecks snapped a four-game losing streak against the Mastodons during the final matchup between the two programs in 2014... Trailing 5-1 heading into the sixth, Western scored seven runs against former 'Don Miranda Kramer... Teagan Walsh collected three RBIs in the victory... Sammy Marshall scored two runs and added a pair of RBIs... Kayla Kirkpatrick got the win in the circle for Western... Western leads the all-time series 17-8... Western is 6-4 in Fort Wayne.
LEATHERNECKS STEALS SPLIT: Western Illinois came from behind to defeat Miami (Ohio) on Monday (March 23)... Marshall scored twice, including the game-winning run in the 8th, stealing home... Tierney Bottino, Teagan Walsh, and Kelsey Marlow collected RBIs in the victory... Walsh also go the win for Western in her first appearance of 2015... The senior allowed three hits over four innings, striking out one and allowing one unearned run... Western dropped game two 5-1... Karissa Kouchis hit her second home run of the year and third of her career.
WEEKEND UPDATE - North Dakota State: The Leathernecks appeared to be on the verge of taking two from the Bison as conference play began... In game one, Western forced NDSU ace Krista Menke from the game after only one strikeout in 3.1 innings and two walks... The Leathernecks were unable to score until the 7th, and fell 5-2... Following a run-rule loss in game two, Western bounced back, taking a 3-2 lead into the 7th in the finale... The Leathernecks were unable to hold on, as Western dropped a 5-3 decision.
