Second Half Run Pushes South Dakota Past Western

The Coyotes downed the Leathernecks 75-61 Thursday night (Feb. 5) in the DakotaDome

VERMILLION, S.D. – Western Illinois men's basketball dropped its Summit League road game at South Dakota Thursday evening (Feb. 5), 75-61.

The Coyotes, who improved to 11-13 overall and 5-5 in league action after the win, turned their one-point halftime lead into a 15-point advantage after opening the second half with a 14-0 run. The Fighting Leathernecks were unable to overcome USD's large second-half advantage, and fell to 8-13 overall on the season and 3-7 in league play.

The Leathernecks were led by junior guard J.C. Fuller's team-high 18 points on 8-of-15 shooting. The Sioux City, Iowa native also recorded three rebounds and had two assists.

Sophomore Garret Covington and junior guard Jamie Batish also scored in double figures. Covington finished with 14 points along with five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Batish tallied 13 points and made 3-of-6 attempts from long range.

Leading WIU in assists was Jabari Sandifer who finished with four. The sophomore guard also had nine points, six rebounds, and two steals.

Senior forward Mohamed Conde finished with six points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Five Leathernecks played 30-plus minutes in the game: Covington (37), Sandifer (35), Conde (34), Fuller (33) and Batish (32).

South Dakota outrebounded Western, 38-26, and had more assists than the Leathernecks, 16-12. WIU committed one more turnover, 10-9.

USD shot 49.2 percent (30-61) from the field compared to WIU's 41.1 shooting percentage (23-56). The Coyotes also shot better than the Leathernecks from beyond the arc, 36.8 percent – 33.3 percent.

Western continues its three-game road trip next week at Oral Roberts Thursday (Feb. 12) and at Omaha Saturday (Feb. 14).
