Western Falls to Oral Roberts, 3-2, in Double Overtime Heartbreaker

Bruce Corrie's season-high nine saves not enough as Leathernecks fall to Golden Eagles

TULSA, Okla. – Tarik Salkicic's golden goal with five minutes remaining in double overtime pushed Oral Roberts past Western Illinois, 3-2, Friday evening at the Case Soccer Complex. The Leathernecks netted one goal in each half, but were unable to come away with a result against the Golden Eagles. WIU falls to 0-2 in Summit League play (2-7-1 overall) while ORU improved to 2-0 in league play and 4-4-1 overall.

"As usual, a wild and crazy affair in Tulsa. Oral Roberts is a solid team and really brought the energy to the game," said head coach Dr. Eric Johnson. "We battled all night and just missed the frame on several quality chances. Bruce Corrie was busy in goal and kept us in the game with a few quality saves, including a penalty kick. We thought we earned our own PK in the 2nd OT, but didn't get the call."

Western started out the aggressor, as they nearly opened up the scoring in the sixth minute. Following a Diego Lopez corner, Jamison Kozar put a shot on target, but the shot was blocked by the Golden Eagle defense and the game would remain scoreless.

The scoreless draw wouldn't last for long, as Western jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the 18th minute on a strike from Erick Bloom. Bloom's first goal of the season came following cross into the box. The Leathernecks tallied a number of shots before Bloom's attack beat the Golden Eagle keeper into the right part of the net.

The Purple and Gold advantage would last until the 34th minute when Matthew Rogers header would beat freshman Bruce Corrie to even the scoring at one-all. Six minutes later, ORU looked to take the lead, but Corrie's save would keep things knotted at one. Corrie would end the night with a season-high nine saves.

After the two sides played to a 1-1 draw in the opening 45 minutes, the Golden Eagles were in prime position to take the lead two minutes into the second half. Following a WIU foul in the box, Matthew Rogers set up for a penalty kick, looking to net his second goal of the night. Corrie came up with an incredible save, and the Leathernecks made Oral Roberts pay minutes later.

Five minutes following the Corrie save, Drew Whalen connected in the 53rd minute to give Western the 2-1 lead. Whalen's fourth goal of the season was set up following an ORU turnover, and Fernando Pacheco found Whalen wide open for the easy put away.

The back and forth game would swing back towards Oral Roberts in the 65th minute as Mira Edgardo's  unassisted goal evened the scoring at two-all.

Pacheco nearly ended things in the first overtime period, as he put one on frame halfway through the first part of extra time. Hunter Harrison's save preserved the draw, and forced a second overtime. Five minutes into the second overtime, Salkicic sent the Golden Eagles home a winner.

Western returns home for a nonconference match against Bradley on Monday, October 5, as the Leathernecks host in-state foe Bradley. Kick-off at John MacKenzie Alumni Field is set for 4 p.m.
