Women's Soccer Falls to Denver

Skyler Jessop scores her fourth goal of the season in loss

DENVER, Colo. – The Western Illinois women's soccer team continued its league campaign on Friday, October 23, against Denver. Skyler Jessop scored her fourth goal of the season, but it was not enough as the Leathernecks fell to the Pioneers by a score of 2-1 to drop to 1-4 in league play (2-12 overall). With the win, Denver improves to 2-3 in Summit League play and 2-11 overall.

"They were better than us in the first half and I thought we were better than them in the second half. We were fantastic leading up to Skyler's equalizer, and un-fantastic to leave their player completely open for their match winning goal," said head coach Dr. Ted Flogaites. "I thought we were super dangerous at times, but we are on the receiving end of a result for the twelfth time and that's not acceptable since we have enough tools to win. We missed a great chance to open the second half, and a sitter from seven or nine yards out. We don't finish with the conviction we need to put teams away."

In the 20th minute, Denver's Karina Fredette played a ball into the center of the box that bounced off of a Western defender and into the back of the net resulting in an own goal and the Pioneers took a 1-0 lead.

In the 31st minute, Gina Scaffidi placed a shot right on target, forcing Denver's keeper to make her first stop of the night.

As time ran out in the first half, Denver's Stella Norman placed a ball in the box that found the foot of Lilly McSwain who put a shot on goal, but Victoria Kappel was there to make the save to keep the Pioneers from extending their lead going into halftime.

Western's offensive attack started off strong following intermission, as Brianna Hughes placed a shot right on frame, but her attempt did not make it past the keeper. Denver responded with a shot on goal of its own five minutes later, but Kappel was there to make the stop.

In the 58th minute, the attack continued when Hughes flicked the ball to Skyler Jessop who put the ball over the keeper's head to even the score at 1-1. The equalizer was Jessop's fourth goal of the season, and Hughes' first assist.

Less than 10 minutes later, Denver answered and regained the lead by a score of 2-1 following a shot from Makenzie Bothner that found the back of the net.

Jessop fired off two shots a few minutes later, but her first look was blocked. After finding the deflection, she took another chance that ultimately went high. The two sides would exchange a few clean looks during the remainder of the half, but neither side was able to score. After 90 minutes of play, the Pioneers would take the victory by a final score of 2-1.

The Purple and Gold's last road trip of the season will conclude on Sunday, October 25, at South Dakota. Kickoff is set for noon.
