Leathernecks Fall to Oral Roberts in Five

Western hosts Omaha on Tuesday, October 20

TULSA, Okla.  – The Western Illinois volleyball team rounded out its weekend of competition on Sunday, October 18, as the Leathernecks hit the road to take on Oral Roberts. Western claimed victories in the second and third sets, but were unable to find a third victory, as WIU fell by a final score of 3-2. Western falls to 3-19 (1-6) on the year while the Golden Eagles improve to 5-3 in The Summit League and 11-10 overall.

"We saw really great play out of our team the first three sets. We fell off in the fourth, and couldn't regain our momentum," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "I think our team responded well as we made some rotational adjustments today. We had too many unforced errors throughout the match, and ultimately that hurt us. The good news is that they're fixable things, and we look forward to getting back into the gym tomorrow to prepare for Omaha."

Incorporating a two setter system for the first time this season, Western was in position to take a first set victory. The Leathernecks owned a 21-20 lead in the closing moments, but a 5-2 Golden Eagle run to end the set pushed ORU past WIU, 25-23.

The Leathernecks were able to rebound in the second set and even the match at 1-all. No team was able to gain any momentum through the early portions of the set, as neither team led by more than two points. Western collected the first three-point lead of the set, using a 3-0 run to jump ahead by a 16-13 margin. Shiah Sanders tallied the first kill, while Peyton Crosser recorded back-to-back kills, to push Western ahead.

WIU then used a key 4-0 run to jump out to a 22-17 lead late in the set. A Golden Eagle ball handling error opened the run before Krishna Merriam and Jordan Jackson teamed up for a block. ORU committed another ball handling error, and an attack error ended the run. After giving a point back to Oral Roberts, Western put an exclamation point on the set by claiming the final three points. Melanie Patenaude recorded a kill from the hands of Morgyn Bullock before Abby Skryd set up Sanders for a kill. Skryd then capped the 25-18 victory with an ace.

Western used the momentum gained in the second set to explode out of the gates in the third. The Leathernecks opened on an 8-1 run to build a lead they would not let go of the rest of the way. Crosser and Bullock each tallied aces, Crosser and Lexi Kolschefski connected on kills and teamed up on a combination block to push the WIU advantage to seven.

Oral Roberts was able to cut the deficit to three on two separate occasions in the set, but each time Western had an answer. The Leathernecks capped off the 25-18 victory by taking three of the final four points, highlighted by a Sanders kill.

Western was unable to claim the fourth or fifth sets, falling 25-16, 15-6, to drop the five-set match to the Golden Eagles.

Crosser (16) and Patenaude (10) led the way in kills, while Bullock tallied 21 assists in her first match as a setter. Skryd tallied 19 assists and three aces and Kaili Simmons collected a team-best 27 digs.

WIU returns to action Tuesday, October 20, as the Leathernecks host Omaha in Summit League play. First serve is set for 6 p.m. inside Western Hall.
