Leathernecks Fall 3-0 to Crusaders

Western Illinois falls to 1-5 in 2014.

MACOMB, Ill. – Fighting Leatherneck women's soccer dropped a 3-0 decision to Valparaiso on Sunday (Sept. 7). Western Illinois stands at 1-5 in 2014.

"I don't think you can win a match at the college level when you bring that little energy to the match," said head coach Ted Flogaites. "I think we got out-competed in every facet and quite frankly I don't think we ever showed up for this match."

The Leathernecks nearly jumped in front just 10 minutes in, but Amy Bennett's shot was saved. Six minutes later, the Crusaders (2-3) broke through, taking a 1-0 lead.

Western had a chance to level the match but Tyra Markey's effort was saved as well. Late in the first half, the Leathernecks nearly passed themselves through the Crusader backline, but the flag went up on Andrea Ferguson, signaling offside. On the ensuing free kick, a misplayed ball defensively led to a one-on-one situation and a second goal for Valpo.

Western put Valpo under pressure immediately in the second half, earning a free kick in the attacking third, but Ferguson couldn't direct her header on target, keeping the score at 2-0.

In the 73rd minute, Valparaiso scored again, increasing the lead to 3-0.

Western Illinois is back in action on Friday (Sept. 12) in Kansas City, Mo. to take on former conference foe UMKC at 4 p.m.
