Box Score MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois women's soccer dropped a 2-0 decision to Drake on Sunday (Sept. 14) at John MacKenzie Alumni Field. The Fighting Leathernecks are now 1-7 overall in 2014.
Sarah Wright nearly opened the scoring in the ninth minute of play but her shot hit the crossbar. Wright's rebound landed at the feet of
Skyler Jessop who was one-on-one with the goalkeeper but she was ruled offside.
Just six minutes later, the Bulldogs found the back of the net to go in front 1-0. Western Illinois would get to halftime trailing by one, as neither side was able to get a dangerous look at net after the opening goal.
The Leathernecks immediately pressed forward to begin the second 45 minutes of play. The Bulldogs however would strike again on a chipped pass over the top creating a one-on-one situation, increasing the Bulldog lead to 2-0.
Tyra Markey found herself in a great position to bring the Leathernecks to within one in the 63rd minute, but her effort was saved. Shortly after,
Sarah Hall had a shot blocked and then
Mary Street came forward and nearly scored at the near post but was denied by the goalkeeper.
Western Illinois will play two more non-conference matches before beginning Summit League play. The first will be at home Sunday (Sept. 21) at 12 p.m. against Green Bay.
