Leathernecks shutout Western Michigan 3-0 in Macomb

Western scores three goals in the first half to clinch the victory.

MACOMB, Ill. - In Sunday's (Sept. 21) battle for the west, Western Illinois defeated Western Michigan 3-0 at John MacKenzie Alumni Field in Macomb, Illinois and improved their record to 3-4-1. Mario Alvarez and Austin Gochneaur scored a combined three goals in the first half to lead the Leathernecks on the way to the shutout victory.

"The first half was good and the second half was poor," said head coach Dr. Eric Johnson. "Not only were we able to create chances, but we were also able to finish them, which is critical. However, it seemed like we were happy to sit on the 3-0 lead in the second half, and while we played hard, we did not play well in the final period."

The scoring came fast and furious in the opening 45 minutes for Western Illinois as junior forward Austin Gochneaur notched his first goal of the season on a header off of a Fernando Pacheco cross. Two minutes and 58 seconds later, Gochneaur struck again, this time with an assist to senior Mario Alvarez who put it over the goalie's shoulder to make it 2-0 Leathernecks.

Alvarez, not to be out done by Gochneaur's three points, would strike again in the 35th minute on a technical passing sequence from Oscar Ortega and Armel Kouassi. The goal would mark Alvarez's first career multi-goal game and give him four points in the match as WIU would go into halftime leading the Broncos 3-0.

In the second half, the Leatherneck defense stepped into the spotlight as Western Michigan stepped up the pressure. The Broncos would go on to fire off 15 second half shots to WIU's three. However, offense would not be needed from the Leathernecks as senior goalkeeper Yves Dietrich would make six saves in the final 45 minutes and earn his second shutout of the season.

The Purple and Gold victory ends a four-game Western Michigan winning streak while also marking the most goals scored and largest winning margin for the Leathernecks so far in 2014.

Coach Johnson and the Fighting Leathernecks get a week off before traveling to Highland Heights, Kentucky to take on Northern Kentucky next Sunday (Sept. 28) at noon (CT).
