Leathernecks Lose in Double Overtime

Western Illinois men's soccer fell to Valparaiso 2-1 on Friday (Sept. 19)

VALPARAISO, Ind. - Western Illinois men's soccer traveled to Valparaiso, Indiana on Friday (Sept. 19) and fell 2-1 to the Crusaders after 105 minutes of action. Leatherneck freshman Alejandro Pacheco scored the first goal of his career in the loss while the Purple and Gold dropped to a record of 2-4-1 on the season.

"We had an opportunity to at least get out with a draw, so the result was a bit frustrating," said head coach Dr. Eric Johnson. "Our effort was good, and we limited their chances for the most part. Valparaiso is a disciplined and well organized team that is off to a very good start."

Western opened up the scoring in the 33rd minute on an unassisted 20 yard strike from Pacheco. For the remainder of the half, the Leatherneck defense held the Crusaders scoreless on seven shots, two of them going on goal.

The second half tilted in Valparaiso's favor as they outshot WIU six to three with Jordan James knocking in the equalizer in the 69th minute. Western's defense would stand strong, shutting out the Crusaders for the remainder of regulation. Following a scoreless opening period of overtime, Jordan James would strike again in the 105th minute with the gamewinner, ending the night for Western.

Friday's contest was the Leathernecks third overtime match this year, leaving the Purple and Gold with a record of 0-2-1 when extra minutes are played.

Coach Johnson and the team return home this Sunday (Sept. 21) for a home faceoff against the Western Michigan Broncos at 2:30 p.m. on John MacKenzie Alumni Field. Sunday's game is the second half of a soccer double header that starts with the women taking on Green Bay at noon.
