Western Illinois Men’s Basketball Drops Nonconference Tilt at William and Mary Tuesday

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Western Illinois struggled shooting the ball Tuesday night (Nov. 25) in an 83-49 loss at William and Mary. The Fighting Leathernecks fell to 1-3 on the year after the loss, while the Tribe improved to 4-1.

Garret Covington was one of two Leathernecks to score in double figures on the night, finishing with 13. The Edwardsville, Ill. native scored most of his points from beyond the arc, knocking down 3-of-5 from long range. Covington also led the team in rebounds with six.

Mike Miklusak finished with 10 points, and junior Jamie Batish finished with eight. Both players connected on two three pointers in the defeat.

The first half was all William and Mary as the Tribe built a 48-15 lead heading into the locker room at the half. The 33-point deficit at the midway point proved to be too much for the Leathernecks to overcome as the Tribe cruised to their fourth consecutive victory of the season.

The Tribe shot better than the Leathernecks from the field (52.7-26.8) and the three-point line (39.1-33.3) in the game. WIU was successful from the free throw line, however, connecting on all 12 of its attempts. William and Mary made 16-of-22 (72.7) of its shots from the charity stripe.

The Tribe outrebounded the Leathernecks 45-26, and finished with 16 assists compared to WIU's eight. Both teams had 15 turnovers.

Two newcomers, freshmen DeVante Mayes and Kam Rowanmade their first appearances of the season in the loss.

William and Mary had four players finish in double figures led by Marcus Thornton who tallied 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor and 3-of-6 from long range.

The Western Illinois men's basketball squad returns to Macomb for its next game when it plays host to Greenville College following the WIU women's game versus North Dakota. The women's game is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m., and the men's game is slated to tip at 7:05 p.m.
