MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois freshman pitcher Nick Smith (Greenfield, Ind./New Palestine) has been named the Papa John's Scholar-Athlete of the Week for his accomplishments on the field and in the classroom.

Smith controlled No. 8 Georgia and led Western to a 7-4 victory on Sunday afternoon with 7.2 innings and seven strikeouts while allowing two earned runs on six hits to collect his first collegiate victory and hand the Bulldogs just their second loss.

On the season, Smith is 1-0 with a 4.08 ERA over 17.2 innings with 14 strikeouts while only allowing a .221 opponent's batting average. He is part of a pitching staff for the Leathernecks that carries a 4.24 ERA.

Smith boasts a 3.33 GPA in University Advising.
