Ill. -Hailey Bickford and Kelsey
Michelini each picked up complete-game victories as Western Illinois swept
Centenary in a doubleheader on Thursday, April 21 at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium.
The Fighting Leathernecks (15-21, 11-9) picked up two
wins in a row for the first time since sweeping Oakland in the first Summit
League series of the season in early March.
The Ladies (4-30, 2-18) dropped their ninth contest
in a row. The two teams will wrap up their three-game series tomorrow with a 3
p.m. first pitch. Western Illinois will recognize its six departing seniors in
a pre-game ceremony.
Game One -
Western Illinois 12, Centenary 4 (5 innings)
Western Illinois took an early 1-0 lead, but was
forced to rally from behind in a run-rule shortened game one. Ashley Campbell's
solo homer to left put the Leathernecks on the board in the second inning but
Centenary would rally for four runs in the top of the third.
The Ladies plated three of their runs on RBI singles
while the fourth run came across when Leatherneck catcher Nikki Marinec
attempted to throw a runner out at third. Marinec's throw bounced into left
field and allowed Reggie Salvatore to score.
The Leathernecks would roar back with seven runs on
six hits and an error in the bottom half of the inning. Jamie Goss got the
scoring started with an RBI when she reached via a fielder's choice.
Erin Schlotfeldt's two-run single tied the game at
4-4 before a fielding error by Centenary center fielder Nicole Warren allowed
Goss and Schlotfeldt to score.
Beth Golitko's RBI single with one out plated another
run later in the inning to give Western a 7-4 lead heading into the middle
stages of the game.
Western Illinois would plate two more runs in the
fourth as Colleen Biebel scored on an error and Briana Williams reached home
during a rundown between first and second.
The Leathernecks would walk off with the win in the
fifth when Alex Pflieger scored on an error following her RBI double to right
center.
Bickford (6-6) picked up the win after allowing four
runs (three earned) on seven hits in 5.0 innings. She walked three batters and
struck out one.
Lauren Highsmith (2-23) was tagged with the loss
after allowing seven runs (six earned) on five hits in 2.0 innings. Lynsi Unruh
allowed five runs (two earned) on four hits in 2.0 innings in relief.
Schlotfeldt led all players with two RBI while Biebel
and Hannah Frenell each scored two runs. The Leathernecks left just three
runners on base while Centenary stranded four and committed three errors.
Game Two -
Western Illinois 11, Centenary 0
Megan Kelly drove in three runs and Kesley Michelini
allowed just two hits as Western Illinois capped off a sweep of Centenary with
an 11-0 victory in game two on Thursday.
The Leathernecks struck early and often in the
contest, plating single runs in the first and second innings to jump out to a
2-0 lead. Schlotfeldt's RBI triple in the first and Frenell's sacrifice fly in
the second scored the first two runs of the game.
Western Illinois would tack on four more runs in the
third in three hits. Schlotfeldt's RBI double made it 3-0 before Kelly's
three-run blast to left center put the Leathernecks up 6-0.
Goss' RBI single started off the scoring in the
fourth as five runs came across to score in the inning. Campbell picked up an
RBI with a bases loaded walk before Goss scored on an error. Pflieger's two-run
single to left capped of the scoring and have the Leathernecks an 11-0 victory.
Centenary was never able to threaten in the contest
as Michelini (5-10) allowed just two hits in a complete-game shutout. She walked
just two while striking out six.
Reggie Salvatore (0-2) took the loss as she allowed
nine runs (six earned) on nine hits in 3.1 innings of work. Highsmith pitched
the final two-thirds of an inning in relief and allowed to unearned runs.
Kelly led Western Illinois with three RBI while four
Leathernecks picked up two hits. Biebel and Goss each scored twice as Western
pounded out 10 hits.
Each team stranded four runners and committed two
errors and Western Illinois picked up two stolen bases while Centenary was
thrown out in its only attempt.
