TULSA,
Okla. - The Western Illinois volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (18-25, 21-25, 10-25)
decision to conference foe Oral Roberts Saturday night at
the Aerobics Center.
The
Fighting Leathernecks (3-5, 1-1 Summit League), who entered the match riding a
two-game winning streak, were held to a .031 attack percentage by the Golden
Eagles (4-5, 2-0 Summit League).
"There was solid action on both sides tonight
and that made for a great atmosphere," Western Illinois head coach Kym
McKay said. "We are disappointed in the outcome but we know we can control
our side better. The team is very excited about the upcoming home stretch (five
matches) and we are looking forward to play in front of our fans."
The Western Illinois
men's soccer team, in Tulsa, Okla. for this weekend's Tulsa Hurricane
Classic, attended the match to show support and cheer on the
Leathernecks. McKay said having Eric Johnson's squad at the match
created an intense environment and helped the Leathernecks create momentum
throughout the night.
"The girls were very excited about having the
men's soccer team in attendance and it made for a fun atmosphere," McKay said. "It was nice to have a vocal cheering section on the road and it really
speaks to the quality support shown by all programs in our athletic department."
Western
recorded three total blocks in the first set, but had nine attack errors and
ORU won the set 25-18. In the second set, the Leathernecks controlled play
early and led 20-18, but the Golden Eagles tallied six consecutive
points late and captured the set 25-21. Oral Roberts ran out to a 6-0 lead in
the third set and recorded a .385 attack percentage in
a 25-10 victory.
Junior
Allison Gilbert had 10 kills and led the Leathernecks in kills for the fourth
consecutive match. Gilbert now owns a team-high 101 kills on the season. Sophomore
Katie Hosteng recorded seven kills with a team-high .467 attack percentage and
junior Brooke Stittleburg picked up her team-high seventh service ace of the
season.
