Bison defeat Leathernecks, 4-2

FARGO, N.D. - The Fighting Leatherneck softball team fell in the series finale with North Dakota State, 4-2, at the Ellig Sports Complex on Saturday, April 17.

With the game tied at one in the bottom of the third and with only one out, North Dakota State (24-20, 9-6 Summit League) took a one-run lead (2-1) on a bases loaded walk by Kamren Ferguson. After a Leatherneck pitching change, Lori Pankratz struck out two batters to get Western (24-14, 10-2 Summit League) out of the jam.

The Bison pushed their lead to three (4-1) in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two runs on four hits.

In the top of the sixth, Julie DePolo hit her second home run of the weekend, bring the Leathernecks within two (4-2). Jamie Goss collected a hit on the next at bat, but Western was unable to score any more runs in the inning.

The Leathernecks were unable to rally back in the top of the seventh, falling to 10-2 in conference play with the loss.

Western got on the scoreboard first in the top of the third on a Goss RBI double to center field.

The Bison out hit the Leathernecks by four (9-5) in the contest, but left 11 runners on base to Western's four. The Leathernecks committed two errors on the day while the Bison had one.

DePolo led the team at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance with an RBI and two runs while Goss added two hits.

Ferguson (13-9) took the loss, tossing three strikeouts and walking four in 2.1 innings of work. Pankratz threw four strikeouts and allowed six hits in 3.2 innings of work.

The Leathernecks are back in action on Sunday, April 18 against the Iowa Hawkeyes at 1 p.m. in Iowa City, Iowa.
