GALESBURG, Ill. ? The Western Illinois women's tennis team defeated Chicago State and South Dakota State in Friday's competition.
The women defeated Chicago State, 4-2, with wins at No. 3 singles from freshman Stephanie Baumer and senior Jessica Drake. Junior Danielle Moy took the win at No. 5 singles spot, 6-0, 6-0. Doubles competition was not played.
"We rested the players a lot this week after last weekend's grueling matches and it showed today," head coach Michael Hunt said. "We were rusty and didn't compete to the best of our ability. If we do that again tomorrow, we'll lose. We were fortunate to get out today with two wins. Tomorrow is Jessica Drake and Constanza Camacho's last home matches at Western Illinois. We'd like to send them out with another win."
The Westerwinds (9-6) defeated the Jackrabbits (3-7), 4-2. Sophomore Kim Lennartsson took the No. 1 singles position, 6-3, 6-1, while freshman Yana Meinert defeated South Dakota State's Kate Wylie, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 2 singles spot. Freshman Courtney Brooks took the win at No. 5 singles slot, 6-1, 6-1, and senior Jessica Drake defeated Carrie Jansen, 7-6(4), 6-4, at No. 6 singles. Doubles competition was not played.
The Westerwinds continue competition in their last home match, Saturday, at 4 p.m., at their indoor facility.
