University Mourns Loss of Joe Protsman

[Jan. 31] - Visitation and services for former senior associate athletic director Joe Protsman, 54, of Macomb, who died late Sunday night (Jan. 29) following an extended illness, have been set.The family will meet with friends from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2 at Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home, 201 W. Carroll, Macomb, where there will be pictures, a video and an urn containing the cremains.Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 3 at Macomb Assembly of God Church, 112 Robin Road, off of Hwy. 136 West.Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or to the McDonough County Hospital Hospice.[Jan. 30] MACOMB, Ill. - Joe Protsman, a Western Illinois University Athletics Hall of Fame inductee (1990), and longtime coach and athletics administrator, passed away late last night (Jan. 29) at his home in Macomb following a long illness. He was 54.?As a department, we are deeply saddened by Joe?s passing,? said Director of Athletics Dr. Tim Van Alstine. ?Joe was a loyal and valued member of our department for a very long time. He was a uniquely dedicated individual, always focusing on the coaches, the student-athletes and the department before himself.?A former All-America wrestler for the Leathernecks, Protsman was a four-year letterwinner from 1970-73. He finished fifth at the 1971 NCAA Division II national championships, and placed seventh in 1972 and 1973. As a senior he was named Western Illinois? Top Scholar-Athlete and was selected as one of the nation?s Outstanding College Athletes. Protsman, who taught physical education classes at Western from 1981 until 1990, served as both head wrestling coach and business manager for the men?s athletics department from 1981 until 1985. He was then promoted to Assistant Athletics Director and was given fiscal management responsibilities for the entire athletics program. Protsman's tenure ended in November 2005, as Senior Associate Athletics Director, after 24 years of service to the University.Protsman, born September 2, 1951, earned his bachelor?s degree in physical education (1973) and master?s degree in athletics administration (1986) from Western Illinois. A 1969 graduate of Keokuk (Iowa) High School, he and his wife, Diana, have lived in Macomb for more than 30 years and have three children, Troy, Felicia and Chris.
