Women?s Soccer Loses In A Shootout With Evansville

MACOMB, Ill. - The Western Illinois University women?s soccer team lost to Evansville Sunday, 6-4 in a highly offensive match at MacKenzie Alumni Field. Four different Western players scored goals.Evansville got on the board first as Keshia Malone drove upfield and put it past Western goalkeeper sophomore Julie Remes (Arden Hills, Minn.) in the 12th minute. Western came back as freshman Katelyn Wisner (Lenexa, Kan.) took a served ball in the middle of the field from sophomore Robyn Ruypers (Petrolia, Ontario) and shot it in from five yards out in the 25th minute.The Purple Aces? Kayla Lambert put Evansville on top just before the half as she took a loose ball in the box and put it in the net.The next seven goals occured out of halftime with Western?s sophomore Liz Remes (Arden Hills, Minn.) striking first in the 55th minute. Remes took a rebounded shot by freshman Kim Schuneman (Wauwatosa, Wis.) off of Evansville?s goalkeeper Whitney Raeon and put it in. Sophomore Kelly Warner (Lombard, Ill.) struck right back one minute later.Evansville came back with a goal to tie the game at 3-3 in the 58th minute. Schuneman then headed in a direct free kick from senior Andrea Fernandez (St. Louis, Mo.) from 5 yards out to put Western on top 4-3. The Purple Aces came back to score three unanswered goals to put the match out of reach for Western.?I told the team at?the end of the game they should be very happy and proud about how they played,? head coach Kevin Sherry said. ?It was a terrible start to the game, but they didn?t give up and fought back with a lot of heart. The future is positive for this program. Many of the players in many positions showed they are more than capable of playing at this level.?Shots for the match were even at 19 apiece, while Western held the edge 7-6 in saves for the match.Warner led Western with four shots, while Lambert had seven for Evansville.Western?s next match will be Friday, as it hosts Southern Utah at 4 p.m. from MacKenzie Alumni Field.
