MACOMB, Ill. - Senior pitcher Karenmarie Pe?a (East Moline, Ill.) and senior outfielder Jess Stanforth (Rock Island, Ill.) have been named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association 2005 Great Lakes All-Region Second Team.Pe?a was the Mid-Con Pitcher of the Year and a first team all-conference selection after leading Western to a runner-up finish in the regular season and at the conference tournament. Pe?a finished the season 18-16 with a 3.56 ERA and 162 strikeouts. She also held opponent?s to a .258 batting average, tops in the Mid-Con. Pe?a led the Mid-Con with 210.2 innings pitched, 43 appearances and four shutouts.Pe?a threw her first career no-hitter against Oakland on April 29 and also threw a one-hitter against Centenary on April 8. In only two seasons at Western after transferring from Santa Fe (Fla.) CC, Pe?a is fourth all-time with .75 strikeouts per inning. She is also fifth all-time with 336 strikeouts, sixth in complete games (40), seventh in appearances (85) and wins (38), and ninth in innings pitched (449).Stanforth was named to the All-Mid-Con First Team for the second consecutive season after leading the Mid-Con with 58 hits, 108 total bases, 26 walks and 12 home runs. Stanforth was also ranked second in slugging percentage (.647), on-base percentage (.431), runs (34) and doubles (14), third in RBI (32) and fourth in batting average (.347). Stanforth was a three-time player of the week and the March Student-Athlete of the Month.All-time, Stanforth is second in home runs (25) and runs scored (118). She is third in doubles (51), sixth in RBI (92) and slugging percentage (.510), seventh in hits (188) and walks (56) and eighth in games played (205). ?I think this is an outstanding award and honor for both Karenmarie and Jess,? head coach Kathy Veroni said. ?This caps off a great year for both players and is further confirmation of how outstanding their season?s have been.?Pe?a and Stanforth are now eligible for the NFCA All-America team when it is selected later this month.
