MACOMB, Ill. - N?Vonta Kentle (Pine Bluff, Ark.) led all scorers with 16 points off the bench as Western Illinois shot 63 percent from the field in its 110-55 season-opening win over Harris-Stowe.The Leathernecks (1-0) jumped out to an early 12-4 lead in the first three minutes with the help of six points from Fred Oguns (Lagos, Nigeria). Western used an 11-0 run midway through the first half to take a 30-12 lead at the 9:24 mark, then used an 18-5 run, which included a pair of three-pointers by Sammy Hunter (Huntsville, Ala.) and a pair of field goals by Kentle, to go up 28, 51-23, with 1:55 remaining before the break. The Leathernecks matched their largest lead of the period with a 58-30 advantage at the end of the first half, after shooting 72 percent (23-32) from the floor.Western Illinois stretched its lead to 30, 65-35, just 2:30 into the second half and led by 40, 86-46, at the 9:19 mark. The Leathernecks? lead was at 49 when they hit the 100-point mark with 3:27 to play, and grew as large as 57 on two occasions in the final two minutes. Tonight marked the Leathernecks? first 100-point game under head coach Derek Thomas and the first since a 110-83 win over St. Ambrose during the 2002-03 season.The Leathernecks tallied 64 of their 110 points in the paint and outscored the Hornets 36-2 off of turnovers. The Hornets (0-4) committed 21 turnovers while the Leathernecks committed just 10. Oguns and David Jackson (Memphis, Tenn.) added 15 points each and freshman Lorenzo Taylor contributed 10 points and a game-high eight rebounds off the bench in his Leatherneck debut. Junior Sean Blalock (Aurora, Ill.) recorded career highs of seven points, three rebounds, a game-high eight assists, two blocks and three steals in 20 minutes off the bench, while Hunter added nine points and seven assists in his first game at Western Illinois.As a team, the Leathernecks hit 47 of their 75 field goal attempts for a shooting percentage of 62.7 percent and hit 10-of-25 from three-point range (40 percent). They held the Hornets to 33.9 percent shooting, 20-of-59 from the field and 4-of-21 (19 percent) from long range. The Hornets were led by Tydrell Stevens? 16 points and eight rebounds, and by Dustin Fox?s 14 points. They outrebounded the Leathernecks 21-18 in the first half, but Western Illinois won the overall rebounding battle, 31-44.Western Illinois travels to Utah Valley State Tuesday for its first road game of the season.
