MACOMB, Ill. - While in Tampa, Florida, Western Illinois head baseball coach Stan Hyman had a special visit with Connie Kowal, the starting third baseman of the ?74 Leatherneck team which won a league championship. Kowal, senior marketing director for the NFL?s New Orleans Saints, invited Hyman and his wife, Robin, to be guests at the Saints game in Tampa versus the defending Super Bowl champion Buccaneers.Following the Saints 17-14 upset win, the Hymans received the opportunity to celebrate with the Saints, meeting head coach Jim Haslett, running back Freddie McAfee, and defensive end Charles Grant.?It was great to see Connie again,? said Hyman, who first met the Saints executive at the LSU/WIU football game in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in September. ?Connie?s an accomplished alum who is proud of his baseball days at Western. He?s also greatly respected by the Saints players, coaches, and staff. It was impressive to see first hand how highly pro football players think of Connie.?It also was a lot of fun to watch the Saints upend the defending world champs,? Hyman added. ?Keyshawn Johnson seemed extreme quiet walking off the field while the Saints were celebrating the win.
