TUSCOLA, Ill. - The Western Illinois University men?s golf team took its first team title of the fall season, winning the Ironhorse Intercollegiate at the Ironhorse Golf Course. Senior Ryan Runser (Macomb, Ill.) was the highest Leatherneck finisher with a tie for second.Runser (66-78-79--223) carded a career low 6-under-par 66 to hold a three stroke first round lead. The senior?s first round score is tied for the Mid-Con low this fall. Playing in his first tournament this fall, Runser?s previous collegiate low was a 73 in the spring of 2001. Western?s previous low this fall was a 69 by sophomore Dan Vojta (Palatine, Ill.) at the Harris Fall Classic. Runser is also the top Leatherneck finisher this fall with his second-place honor. The previous best was a fourth-place decision by freshman Tim Streng (Mount Prospect, Ill.) at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate.Other Leatherneck golfers aiding the team?s first team title since the Beu/Mussatto Classic on April 12, 2002: senior Rich Thomas (Monmouth, Ill.) notched his highest finish of the fall with a tie for eighth (73-74-82--229). Thomas entered the tournament with a scoring average of 76.7 and tied his season low of 73 in the first round. Vojta finished tied for 27th (83-71-81--235), coming back with his second-lowest round of the fall in the second round. Streng finished tied for 40th (76-75-87--238) and freshman Ben Hermes (Dixon, Ill.) finished tied for 49th (72-81-87--240).Western Illinois will complete its fall schedule this weekend, October 18-21 at the SMS Invitational in Springfield, Missouri. The event will be contested at Highland Springs Country Club.
