ROCHESTER, MI - The men?s and women?s swimming and diving teams from Western Illinois University tried to chip away at the opening day leads set by Oakland, but were unable to knock off the host of the 2002 Mid-Continent Conference Swimming & Diving Championships, claiming second place on the men?s and women?s side.The men were led by sophomore Kevin Barrow (Schaumburg, IL), who claimed individual titles in the 100 yard backstroke (51.35), 200 yard backstroke (1:51.91) and the 100 yard fly (51.31). Fellow sophomore Brandon Jernigan (Mount Vernon, IN) took home first-place honors in the one-meter diving competition with a score of 497.60 and placed second in the three-meter event with a score of 459.85.Jake Hanson (100 yard freestyle, third-place, 47.10), Greg Roberts (400 yard individual medley, third, 4:14.87), Ty Westre (200 yard freestyle, third, 1:46.70) and Joe Kuchyak (200 yard fly, second, 2:00.32) all earned all-conference honors for placing in the top three.The women were led by all-conference performer Michaela Wright (Aberdeen, Scotland). Her three third-place finishes helped Western to 622 points, edging out Valparaiso (604) and IUPUI (562) for second place. Wright?s 2:09.79 in the 200 yard fly, 59.57 in the 100 yard fly and 2:12.57 in the 200 yard individual medley all netted bronze honors.Although this was the conference meet, Western is back in action next semester in preparation for the Midwest Championships, which will be held on February 20-22 at IUPUI.
