Senior center back Charlie Bales (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) was named the Papa John's 'Scholar Athlete of the Week' for his efforts last weekend at The Summit League Men's Soccer Tournament.
Bales scored the Leathernecks lone goal against tournament champion, Denver, on Sunday (Nov. 16) on a penalty kick. The goal was Bales' seventh of the season, surpassing last year's leading scorer, Husref Jupic.
The captain was also honored as The Summit League 'Defensive Player of the Year' and named First Team All-League on Wednesday (Nov. 12) at The Summit League Men's Soccer Banquet. The honors mark Bales' second-career 'Defensive Player of the Year Award' and his third-career First Team All-League Honor.
During his senior season, the Cedar Rapids, Iowa native was named Summit League 'Player of the Week' twice. In his five years at Western, Bales entered Western's all-time rankings in numerous categories for shots, shots on goal, and game-winning goals, and was named 'top 30' in the nation for the Senior CLASS Award.
Bales carries a 3.599 GPA majoring in Communications and planning to graduate in December.   Â
