Nathan Mundt

In just his second year as Western Illinois head men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach, Nathan Mundt was named 2007 Mid-Continent Conference Women’s Coach of the Year after leading the women’s team to a second-place finish and the men’s team to a fourth-place finish at the 2007 Mid-Con Championships.

In the 2006-07 season, Mundt coached five individual Mid-Con Champions, placed eight swimmers and divers on the all-conference team and coached the squads to five broken records in the Western Illinois record book.

In his first season as head coach at Western Illinois, Mundt took both the men's and women's programs to third place finishes in the Mid-Con Championships and had 11 student-athletes earn all-conference honors.

Mundt spent the 2004-05 season as the graduate assistant swim coach at Mid-Continent Conference member Valparaiso. Mundt was the interim head coach at Valpo during the 2003-04 season. He was involved in all aspects of coaching during his two years at Valparaiso.

“Nathan is a welcome addition to the coaching staff here at Western Illinois,” said Western Illinois Director of Athletics Tim Van Alstine. “His experience as both an assistant and head coach in the Mid-Con is invaluable in continuing the improvement of our swimming and diving program.”

Prior to his stint at Valparaiso, Mundt was a ticket sales representative for the Detroit Tigers from 2002-03.

A native of Portage, Ind., Mundt was a four-year letterwinner at the University of Tampa. The 2001 graduate led the Spartans to a Southern States Conference championship as a senior. He also earned all-conference honors in the butterfly and sprint freestyle.

Mundt earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Management from Tampa in 2001 and a Master of Science degree in Sports Administration at Valparaiso in the spring of 2005. He and his wife, Erika, were married in October 2005.
