2014 (FRESHMAN)... Appeared in 27 matches as a true freshman while appearing in 98 sets... Made Leatherneck debut against Eastern Illinois... Recorded 242 digs on the season to rank second on the team... Posted 10 or more digs in 11 matches, including a season-high of 20 digs in three matches... Led the team with 32 service aces... Named a Summit League Distinguished Scholar
Western Illinois volleyball head coach April Hall announced the signing of Kayla Ruff on January 13. Ruff joins the Leathernecks after a four-year playing career at Pleasant Valley High School in Bettendorf, Iowa.
"We are very excited to add Kayla to our 2014 class,” said Hall. “Her defensive skill set is unmatched in her class and her mentality is exactly what we need here at Western. She brings confidence, assertiveness and a desire to win that we are excited to have as part of the Leatherneck family."
Ruff was a four-year varsity starter at Pleasant Valley and was tabbed Honorable Mention All-Conference her final three years. She was also named Honorable Mention All-Metro in 2011 and 2012.
The defensive specialist was named Pleasant Valley High School ‘Defensive Player of the Year’ following her senior season in 2013. She finished her career second all-time in school history with 940 digs. She also helped lead the Spartans to a combined 66-9 record over her final two seasons with appearances in the state semifinals and elite 8.
