Indianapolis, IN — The Western Illinois women's soccer team battled through a difficult afternoon Sunday, falling 7-1 to Butler.
Butler jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening 11 minutes before Rita Moran got the Leathernecks on the board in the 12th minute. Callie McMurtrey and Sammy Hunt assisted on the goal, cutting Butler's lead to 2-1.
The Bulldogs answered less than a minute later with a goal from Chloe Brecht to take a 3-1 lead into halftime. Mahee-Lee Caron entered in the first half and made several saves to keep Western within reach.
Butler added four goals in the second half, including two each from Riley Gumm and Brecht, to secure the 7-1 victory. Caron finished with nine saves after entering the match in the first half.
Western Illinois will look to bounce back in its next match against SEMO next Sunday.
