MACOMB, IL - The Western Illinois Women's Soccer team fought hard Sunday afternoon, but ended up losing 3-1 to the Illinois State Redbirds.

Illinois State got the scoring started early with a goal just 1 minute and 31 seconds into the game, when Maggie Dowling put one in, which was assisted by Kaya Durkee.

Western Illinois then gave up 2 goals between the 22nd and 26th minute, when Ava Watson and Rowann Law both were able to put one in the net.

Mahee-Lee Caron was able to put up 5 saves for the Leathernecks in the first half, one in which she faced 12 total shots.

The second half was one that was very back and forth throughout, with Western Illinois and Illinois State both putting up multiple shot attempts, but the Leathernecks' Claire Brown was able to score the lone goal of the second half in the 88th minute, pushing the score to 3-1. The Leathernecks were able to put 3 shots on goal in the second half, but none of the other shots found the back of the net, leaving the score at 3-1 in the end.

Lillian Johns played the second half in goal for Western Illinois, and was able to have 6 saves in her 45 minutes of play.

Western Illinois Women's Soccer will return to action on September 19th for a road match against Butler, before returning home September 27th, with a match against SEMO.
