Leathernecks Fall in Preseason Opener

MACOMB, IL - The Western Illinois women's soccer team opened its 2026 preseason with a hard-fought 1-0 exhibition loss to Northern Illinois University on Wednesday.

The Leathernecks kept the match tied for nearly the entire contest before a Northern Illinois goal broke the tie in the 87th minute.

Sophomore goalkeeper Lillian Johns turned in an outstanding performance in net, recording 10 saves to keep Western Illinois in the match. The Leatherneck back line also delivered a strong defensive effort throughout the afternoon.

Despite the result, Western Illinois showed promising signs on both ends of the field as the team continues to prepare for the regular season.

"Very pleased with the energy and athleticism today," said head coach Ross Henderson. "We had many periods in the game where we were controlling the tempo, keeping possession, getting into dangerous areas. As with any start to a new season we need to execute better, and make better decisions quicker. That being said, we aimed to give energy and support for each other, and we did that throughout. Lily, our goalkeeper, showed her brilliance along with a solid performance from our back line. Lots to build on."

The Leathernecks will wrap up their exhibition schedule on Monday, Aug. 10, when they host Quincy. Western Illinois then opens the 2026 regular season at home on Wednesday, Aug. 12, against Indiana State.
