MACOMB, IL - Western Illinois Softball (10-24, 5-11 OVC) dropped its doubleheader OVC matchup against UT Martin Saturday afternoon at Bettye Giles Softball Field.
The Leathernecks dropped the first game to UT Martin 2-0 in a low scoring contest that saw both teams total 4 hits a piece. The deciding factor in the opening contest was in the 3rd inning when UT Martin's Kennedy Brown stole home for the first run of the game followed by a sacrifice fly from Avary Makarewicz to make the score 2-0. UT Martin would hold on to that lead to take game 1.
The Leathernecks struck first in the 2nd game when
Maria Luna hit her 3rd homerun of the year on a shot to left center to put Western in front 1-0. UT Martin would respond in the 4th on an infield single from Ava Scott that scored 2 for the Skyhawks to put them ahead 2-1. The Skyhawks would go on to score 3 more runs in the 4th followed by 2 runs in the 6th to give them the 7-1 victory over the Leathernecks.
The Leathernecks will look to bounce back in the series finale tomorrow at noon.
