WIU Women’s Tennis Defeats Milwaukee, Falls to NIU

MACOMB,Ill.- The Western Illinois University women's tennis team wrapped up a two-match home stretch against Milwaukee and Northern Illinois, defeating Milwaukee 5-2 and dropping a tough 1-6 decision to the Huskies of Northern Illinois. 

Against Milwaukee, the Leathernecks battled hard in doubles play. Jessica Hess and Mana Fawcett teamed up at the No. 1 spot to secure a 1-0 victory after a retirement due to injury for the Panthers. Madeleine Whip and Richardlyne Francois worked together to get a 6-1 win against Milwaukee at 3 doubles. In singles action, Mana Fawcett battled through a tough first set at No. 1 before taking over in the second set to win the match 7-6, 6-2. Chloe Routier delivered a strong performance at 3 singles winning  6-2, 6-3. Nour Gueblaoui was able to come through in a tough match at 4 singles, winning 6-4, 7-5. After the injury in doubles, the Panthers forfeited 6 singles with Madeleine Whip being the beneficiary. 

In the second match of the weekend, WIU squared off with Northern Illinois and continued to compete at a high level. The Leathernecks took control in doubles, winning at 1 and 2 doubles to secure the doubles point. Fawcett and Hess took the win at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, along with Routier and Nadezhda Petkova winning at No. 2 doubles 6-3. The Leathernecks were swept by the Huskies in singles, with 3 of the matches going to a third set. Chloe Routier fought hard at 3 singles, losing an intense match 2-6, 6-1, 4-6. Gueblaoui continued her high level of play at No. 4 singles but ultimately fell short, 7-5, 3-6, 0-6. Denver Johnson battled back after losing the first set, 2-6, 6-4, 6-10. 

Western Illinois will wrap up its nonconference play on the road at Northern Iowa on March 7, before kicking conference play off a week later at home against Southern Indiana.
