WIU Tennis Falls 3-4 to St. Thomas

MACOMB, Ill.- Western Illinois women's tennis battled through an intense matchup on Saturday against the St. Thomas Tommies, but came up just short in a 4–3 decision.

The Leathernecks started strong by claiming the doubles point, taking two of three courts. Mana Fawcett and Chloe Routier were first off the court at No. 2 doubles with a 6-2 win. Richardlyne Francois and Maddie Whip followed with a solid 7-6, (9-7) victory at No. 3 to secure the early 1-0 team lead.

In singles, the match quickly turned into a grind. Jessica Hess delivered a key singles point at No. 4, winning 6-4, 6-2. Denver Johnson added another point at No. 6 singles, rallying from a set down for a 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 victory.

However, the Tommies answered on the remaining courts. Richardlyne Francois fell in a two-set battle at No. 1 singles (0-6,1-6), and Routier dropped a tough straight-set match at No. 2 (6-2, 0-6, 2-6). Madeleine Whip battled at No. 5 but came up short 2-6, 1-6. Nour Gueblaoui battled hard but came up short in a 4-6, 2-6 defeat.

Western Illinois showed resilience with two singles wins and a strong doubles showing, but the narrow margin showed just how competitive the afternoon was from start to finish against St.Thomas. The Leathernecks will host Saint Louis University before hitting the road to face Omaha and Creighton.
