Leathernecks secure a point in St. Charles

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Western Illinois men's soccer delivered a late equalizer Sunday afternoon, with Fernando Adrados Castro converting a penalty kick in the 88th minute to earn the Leathernecks a 1-1 draw against Lindenwood on the road.

The Leathernecks came out attacking, with Xavier Gagnon and Maksim Palisak creating early chances. On the other end, goalkeeper Harvey Bolland made several key saves in the first half to keep Lindenwood off the scoreboard as both teams headed into halftime deadlocked at 0-0.

Lindenwood broke through in the 55th minute when Clement Baron found the back of the net off an assist from Luke Neely, putting the Leathernecks in a 1-0 hole.

Western Illinois continued to battle and search for an answer. Gagnon put a shot on target in the 79th minute, but Lindenwood goalkeeper Quinn Closson came up with the save.

With time winding down, the Leathernecks got their opportunity. Adrados Castro stepped up to the penalty spot in the 88th minute and delivered, burying the kick to even the score at 1-1 and bring Western Illinois level late.

The Leathernecks held firm through the final minutes to secure the road draw and take a valuable point in Ohio Valley Conference play.
