MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois women's soccer team heads to Southern Indiana on Sunday looking to get back in the win column after a hard-fought 2-1 loss to Eastern Illinois last weekend. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Strassweg Field in Evansville, Indiana.
The Leathernecks showed plenty of fight against the Panthers, responding to an early goal with an equalizer in the 37th minute to send the match into halftime tied at one.
Western Illinois continued to create chances in the second half, but Eastern Illinois regained the lead in the 79th minute. The Leathernecks continued to push for an equalizer in the closing minutes but were unable to find the back of the net.
Despite the result, Western Illinois competed until the final whistle and will look to turn that effort into a positive result Sunday.
Southern Indiana enters the matchup after earning a 1-1 draw against Southeast Missouri on Sunday. The Screaming Eagles fell behind early in the second half but found an equalizer in the 76th minute when Emma Schut headed home a corner kick from Olivia Hass.
The draw marked Southern Indiana's second straight tie to open OVC play after a scoreless match against UT Martin. The Screaming Eagles are still searching for their first conference win, while the Leathernecks look to pick up a result on the road.
With both teams looking to build momentum in conference play, Sunday's matchup gives Western Illinois another opportunity to put together a strong performance and come away with a win.
