Leatherneck Tennis Falls 2-4 against Marquette

MACOMB,Ill.- The Western Illinois women's tennis team dropped a 4-2 decision to Marquette on Saturday afternoon in nonconference action, with the Golden Eagles claiming the doubles point and edging out the Leathernecks in singles play.

Marquette opened the match by sweeping doubles. At No. 1 doubles, Elise Barnstedt and Emma Davis earned a 6-0 win over Richardlyne Francois and Nour Gueblaoui. The Golden Eagles also captured a win at No. 3 doubles to take a 1-0 advantage entering singles competition.

Western Illinois responded with strong performances in singles. Nour Gueblaoui picked up a win at No. 4 singles, rallying past Aiyana Abbott in three sets, including a super tiebreak, to put the Leathernecks on the board. Mana Fawcett followed with a three-set victory at No. 3 singles, defeating Maria Poon to keep WIU within striking distance.

At No. 6 singles, Elena Duva earned a straight-set win over Denver Johnson to pull Western Illinois within one. Marquette clinched the match with singles victories at No. 1 and No. 2, while the No. 5 singles match between Luciana Mendoza and Jessica Hess was abandoned once the team result was decided.

The Leathernecks continue non-conference action next week before turning their attention toward Ohio Valley Conference play.
